This homeschool is a private, family-operated educational program designed to promote academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, creativity, independence, innovation, ethical conduct, and responsible leadership. Instruction is individualized to provide a rigorous education that incorporates Emma and Sarah's interests, abilities, and postsecondary goals while maintaining clearly defined academic standards and expectations. Coursework is aligned, when practicable, with the academic standards and secondary education requirements established by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Educational Opportunities
Primary instruction is provided by Dr. Jeffrey Simmons and Dr. Lisa McLeod-Simmons, parents Emma and Sarah. Both parents hold Ph.D. degrees and have extensive professional experience in education. Their academic and professional backgrounds support advanced instruction, particularly in Science, Technology, and Research, as well as in traditional subjects such as English, Politics, History, Foreign Language, and the Arts.
The homeschool curriculum is further supplemented through direct dual enrollment at Mount St. Mary’s University. Emma and Sarah attend university classes taught by university faculty alongside traditional college students, providing access to a broader range of subjects, greater academic depth, and direct experience with the expectations and rigor of college-level coursework. These experiences have prepared them for college life.
The flexibility of this educational model has also allowed Emma and Sarah to pursue academic, research, and career-development opportunities that are not typically available within a traditional high school setting.
Beyond the Classroom
Their education extends beyond the classroom through experiential educational travel, participation in numerous regional, state, and national STEM competitions, independent research and engineering projects, and extensive career-oriented shadowing and professional experiences. These opportunities allow them to apply academic knowledge to real-world questions, develop research and problem-solving skills, explore potential professions, and engage with professionals in academic and career settings.
Leadership and community service are also important components of the program. Emma and Sarah are encouraged to assume meaningful responsibilities, contribute their time and abilities to their community, and understand that education carries an obligation to use one's knowledge and talents in service to others. Through sustained civic, service, and leadership experiences, they develop initiative, accountability, collaboration, and an appreciation for responsible citizenship.
The homeschool program emphasizes learning as an active process that goes beyond beyond traditional school work. Emma and Sarah have learned to think beyond conventional limits, ask thoughtful questions, investigate complex problems, connect knowledge across disciplines, and apply what they learn in practical and meaningful ways. They have learned to be independent, self-directed, responsible, and capable of taking ownership of both their education and their future goals.
