Sarah Simmons . . . About Me

I'm in 10th grade now and I've loved art for as long as I can remember, especially drawing. I can create things that are beautiful. There are no limits and no rules. What I envision, I can design. For a long time, I wanted to be an artist.

But then I found engineering. And I know now this is what I want. I want to be an engineer, maybe a biomedical engineer, perhaps an aeronautical engineer. I'm drawn to this profession because it involves so many of the things I love. It's detailed and technical. It's experimental and iterative. It's original and innovative. Engineering integrates the goals of  functionality with beauty, real-world problem-solving with the aesthetics of imagination and expression.  Engineering is a science but it's also an art.

In this photo, I am working on applying a nano-material, graphene, to enhance the strength and durability of conductive fabric.

Other Things I Like

In my free time, I enjoy art and music. I sketch and create digital art. I also play the Bass guitar and am a member of the Emmitsburg Community Chorus.. My sister and I both sing first soprano. I also enjoy acting and singing in musical theater productions. In the summer, I love swimming and spending time at the beach. My family also has quite a menagerie of animals that live with us, including two big dogs, three cats, and half a dozen fish.

I like to stay busy and I'm interested in a wide variety of activities. I sing in a community chorus (top right - click to listen) and have acted in musical theater (bottom right). I like learning about new things like soldering, which I did alot of for this project (bottom left). On a recent tour of NIST, I learned about graphene, which we used in our project this year (bottom center). And I love spending time with my dog Stormy (top left).
