Glossary of Technical Terms
Algorithm - A set of rules or procedures for problem-solving operations, typically for a computer.
Artificial Intelligence - A field of Computer Science that deals with computer systems that are able to perform tasks that require human-like intelligence.
Biological Function Sensor - A sensor that measures the biological functions of a living organism, such as breaths per minute or heart rate.
Coding - The action of programming a machine to follow a certain order of actions through written language.
Conductive Fabric - A fabric that has the potential to conduct electricity. A fabric that is either woven with strands that are coated in conductive material, such as copper, nickel, or silver, or has conductive materials embedded inside.
Electrocardiogram (ECG) - A test that records the electrical signals of the heart.
Graphene - A material created from pure carbon that is one atom layer thick. It contains useful properties such as electrical conductivity and extreme durability.
Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)- The collection of medical devices and applications that connect to healthcare information technology systems through online computer networks. Medical devices equipped with Wi-Fi enable machine-to-machine communication, which forms the basis of IoMT.
Inertia Measurement Unit - An electronic device that measures angular velocity and linear accelerations.
Mid-Fidelity Prototype - A level of design that falls between low fidelity and high fidelity prototyping. Refers to a more detailed prototype that objectively shows how it will work.
Nanotechnology - A branch of technology that deals with dimensions of less than 100 nanometers, often involving the manipulation of atoms.
Plethysmography - Measuring the changes in volume of different parts of the body. It is commonly used in testing for blood clots and measuring forced vital capacity.
Pressure Sensor - A device that measures pressure. In this case, pressure can be defined as the amount of force exerted over a specific area.
Spirometry - A common test performed to asses how well the lungs function. It tests how much air is in the lungs and how quickly it can be inhaled and expelled.
Spectral Sensor - A sensor that measures the reflection of light on or through a surface.
Telemedicine - The use of electronic information and communications technologies to provide and support health care when physical distance separates the healthcare provider and patient. Telemedicine include both audio and audio-visual communication platforms. Also referred to as telehealthcare, virtual healthcare and virtual medicine.
Tensile Strength - Tensile Strength refers to the force needed to elongate a fabric to a specific length. (2023, Nelson Labs)
Tidal Volume - The volume of air that is moved in and out with every respiratory cycle, or breath.
Universal Design - The design of an enviroment so that it is made accessible to the greatest extent of people possible, regardless of age, disability, or size.
